Treatment Options
CPAP Therapy
CPAP machines are the most commonly used treatment for moderate and severe sleep apnea. The mask is worn during sleep, and it releases pressurized air that flows continuously or intermittently into the sleeper’s throat, keeping the airway from collapsing. Studies of the effectiveness of CPAP therapy show that people with sleep apnea who consistently use their machines feel better and, as a result of the reduction of apnea and hypopnea episodes during sleep, encounter fewer complications of the disease. However, some people find the CPAP machines claustrophobic or cumbersome, so they may stop using the machine, leaving their sleep apnea untreated.
Oral Appliance Therapy
With so many different oral devices available, selection of a specific one may appear somewhat overwhelming. Don’t use over the counter or online sleep guards as evidence suggest that they do not work. The Best treatment option for you is one that you will wear all night, every night. That’s where we come in. Dr. Farr will provide for you the best device based on your medical history and full dental evaluation.
Combination Therapy
If a single treatment is not effective alone, we are able to combine different therapies to obtain the desired result.
One form of therapy is called Combination Therapy. This may include use of an Oral Device along with CPAP, positional therapy, myofuncitonal therapy, provent and/or surgery.
If more advanced therapy is needed, due to disease severity; an oral Device can be attached directly to a CPAP unit. This combination can maintain the airway and lower CPAP pressures; while eliminating the need for headgear. This is called Integrated Therapy.
Lifestyle Changes
Around 70% of people diagnosed with OSA are overweight or obese. Most often, their health care professionals encourage them to lose weight, as that can sometimes reduce symptoms. Making healthier lifestyle changes can have a positive impact on sleep apnea.
